Angels not going where dogs are

Question:
Can Muslims keep dogs solely as pets and in house and What about the hadith about angles not going where there is a dog in the house?

Answer:
I have already explained my view about the issue of dogs in my answer: Are Dogs Impure?

In my understanding the reported sensitivity and concerns about dogs at the time was due to a local issue regrading their illness. As for angels not entering a house where there is a dog in it, I have not studied the authenticity of this narration yet, but again I relate this to the above mentioned local issue at the time. You perhaps know about the people of Kahf who were pious people and God let them sleep for a long time in a cave. They had a dog that the Qur'an counts it when the Qur'an counts the total number of these people. Do you really believe that because of that dog, angels would not visit these pious people for such a long time?
