About Laghw
Question:
Assalam alikum,
Would watching movies be laghw? I like movies a lot and I learn a lot from them like documentaries, true horror, history and drama even comedy etc. Can you give some examples of Laghw?
Also what about small talk. To start a conversation and talking about football with your friends etc is that laghw? By the way even thow I watch a lot of movies I always learn from them and take the good etc and I always pray and do my religious duties etc and normally I reading something islamic and watch stuff at the same time doing 2 Things at one. I don't just sit hours on end doing nothing and watch movies. I'm always normally doing something to learn about islam. Also is going to a church to learn how they do stuff a form of Laghw.
Answer:
Assalamu Alaykum,
Laghw is anything that can be considered as an engagement that is wasting of time. I may be able to answer all your questions about this by making two points:
1. The definition of laghw is not 'what does not relate to religion, or what does not educate you', the definition is as above. Therefore an activity that may not seem to be related to religion does not necessarily is laghw. For example if you are enjoying the company of your friends or family by watching a 'good' movie then this is not laghw. This is having a good time with friends and family. If you read the life of the prophet (pbuh) you will realise that it was not like he would always doing something directly related to Islam. He also used to spend time enjoying the company of his companions and family. What makes the same activity laghw is if you go into extreme in getting engaged in it in a way that it practically occupies you from other necessities of life, including religious practices.
2. What may not be laghw for one person may be laghw for another. One person may like to spend time with his friends in a reasonable way to enjoy socialising. Socialising is not laghw per se. Another person may feel he is engaged in laghw when he spend time, more than a very limited amount, with his friends and instead may like to spend his time differently. A highly spiritual person may naturally perceive more laghw in what may be seen as normal activity by a less spiritual person.
Going to church to learn how they do things or for curiosity or to respect others, etc. is not laghw.
