Muslim Name for My Daughter
Question:
I am very confuse about my daughter name i want to name her aleeza because this is sweet name to call so please suggest me I am very confuse because somebody saying it is yahudi (Jewish) name
Answer:
The expression 'Muslim name' is a confusing one:
If by this one means names that Muslims are obliged to use as per their religion then Islam has not instructed us about any.
If it means names that refer to words and expressions we find in Islamic sources then these are very good names but they are not obligatory.
If it means the names that Muslims give to their children, then any names can enter into this category once it is commonly used by Muslims. Many names that Muslims are using these days and consider them as 'Muslim Names' was not used by earlier generations of Muslims.
If it means an Arabic name (as many thought so) then again we are not obliged to use Arabic names. There is absolutely nothing wrong if a European or a Chinese Muslim prefers to use a European or a Chinese name for his/her child. It is interesting to note that some Muslims in their passion to use Arabic words as names some times use Arabic names that have meanings that are not quite inline with the a Muslim faith (I prefer not to give examples).
The only names that we are not supposed to use for our children are the names that are suggesting something that goes against our beliefs (i.e. Abd al-Hussain, meaning servant of Hussain) or those that have a commonly known degrading meaning.
There might be some cultural concerns about using the names that belong to other nations or other cultures or religious groups, however from religious point of view the only names that should be avoided are of the kinds that were mentioned above.
I therefore do not see any problem with keeping the name of your daughter as it is.
