Did the Prophet (pbuh) Perform Miracles?
Question:
Salaam bro,
My understanding is that the miracle of prophet pbuh was Quran.
As per 6:35. as I understood Prophet prayed to Allah for miracles but 6;35 was stating that it was not in the scheme of Allah.
Islahi in his commentry of Quran and explanation of verse 9:5 writes that prophet pbuh on the demand of Idolaters showed them miracles which withstood the requirements set by them and thus proved himself true.
Can you please clarify this for me.
Answer:
Salam,
A number of miracles have been reported in the narrations but it seems like in all these instances the main objective was to further assure the faith of the believers rather than proving the truth for the non-believers.
As you wrote, the Qur'an has been the miracle of the Prophet (pbuh) for proving the truth of his message. When the idolaters asked for miracles the answer they received was that the Qur'an should be enough for them if they really open their hearts (29:51).
Verse 6:35 does not rule out miracles however it does say that they will be useless. The verse after that (6:36) says that if they could only 'hear' this was enough for them to be convinced. In a very subtle way this also brings the image of the Qur'an as what could be enough for them if they could 'hear' with open hearts.
