Every Thing Created in Pairs
Question:
Assalamualykum,
In regards to the verse 51:49 which states:
"And from all things We created two mates; perhaps you will remember."
This verse has been confusing me for a couple weeks now and I wanted to know what the correct meaning of this verse is. Can it mean that from everything Allah created he created pairs, or does it mean that everything is created in pairs.
Answer:
Assalamu Alaykum,
وَ مِن كُلِّ شىَْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَينِْ لَعَلَّكمُْ تَذَكَّرُون
And We have created all things in pairs that you may get a reminder (51:49)
The verse means that everything is created in pairs. It will be helpful to analyse why realising this, facilitates remembering of God (as the verse says).
When we look around we cannot help but to appreciate the pairs in everything. Some things are physically in pairs while others are conceptually in pairs.
Some of the examples of the first category are: Man and Woman, Day and Night, Land and Sea, …
Some of the examples of the second category are: Good and Bad, Bravery and Fear, Truth and False.
Beside many other insights, three main effects of observation of the above fact for a person with an honest heart and clear thinking can be as follows:
- Appreciating that the creator of pairs Himself needs to be unique
- Appreciating that in every sphere of life, there is always a right path and a wrong path
- Appreciating that this word as a whole needs to have a pair, that is the hereafter
This is one of the unique styles of reasoning in the Qur’an that targets the common sense rather than complicated philosophical and logical arguments. Yet while appreciating the concept of pairs is on the basis of common sense, the concept lies on a firm philosophical foundation, preparing plenty to think of and delve into for those who like to approach this from a more theoretical perspective.
