Hadith on How to Drink from the Water of Zamzam
Question:
Salam,
Is it possible to confirm the authenticity of this hadith?
Ibn 'Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him said: "If you drink Zam-Zam water drink your fill, turn towards the Qiblah, say "Bismillaah" (in the name of Allaah) and breath three times and when you finish, you should say "Alhamdu lillaah" (All perfect praise be to Allaah)."
Answer:
Salam,
The full hadith is as follows:
Uthman ibn al-Aswad reported that a man came to Ibn Abbas and Ibn Abbas asked him where he was coming from. The man said I had just finished drinking from zamzam. Ibn Abbas then asked me if he had drunk like it deserved it. He asked him, how that is Ibn Abbas, He said, 'When you drink it, face the qibla, then mention God's name, then drink it in three breaths, and drink your fill with it and when you are done, praise God, (This is because) the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, 'One of the differences between us and the hypocrites is that they do not drink their fill of the water of zamzam.'"
(Mustadrak of Hakim, 1738)
The hadith has been narrated in a number of books like Mustadrak of Hakim, Ibn Maje, Sunan al-Daruqtuni and Mujam al-Kabir with a number of chains of narrators all reaching Ibn Abbas.
From the narrators (rijal) point of view, the hadith is problematic and it is not safe to consider it authentic. Al-Albani in his book Irwa al-ghalil fi takhrij ahadith munar al-sabil has provided a very detailed analysis to reveal the weaknesses of the hadith. These include weak narrators and uncertainties in attributing the hadith to some narrators (Irwa al-ghalil, no. 1125).
From the point of view of content (diraya), obviously only the last part of the hadith is (supposedly) from the prophet (pbuh) and the first part that describes how to drink zamzam is (supposedly) only the advice of Ibn Abbas.
Assuming that the hadith is authentic (which is a difficult assumption as explained above), Ibn Abbas is simply sharing his view on how best to appreciate the water of zamzam, in order to be distinguished and different from the hypocrites who does not appreciate it.
May God be satisfied with the family of the Prophet (pbuh) and his pious companions.
