Last two Rak'ats of the Obligatory Prayers
Question:
Dear Sir, Last two Rak’ats of obligatory prayer are similar to first two Rak’ats or different in the sense that we can only recite Al-Fatiha without joining any other part of Quran. Kindly answer and explain.
Answer:
The established Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) indicates that it is only after the Fatiha in the first two Rak’ats of the obligatory prayers that a Sura or part of a Sura is recited. As for the last two Rak’ats of of the Zuhr, Asr and Isha prayers and the last Rak’ah of the Maghrib prayer what we understand from the established Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) is that only Fatiha is to be recited. Of course if someone adds a Sura after Fatiha in these Rak’ats of prayer the prayer is still valid. However it is better to avoid this so that the format of our prayer remains as close as possible to that of the prayer of the Prophet (pbuh).
