Wedding in a Church

Question:

Salamu Aleikum

Is it permissible to marry a Christian women first in the mosque, and then in the church. She wants to marry in the church as well, will the marriage be valid?

Answer:

Alaykum Assalam,

We need to separate the requirements of religion for marriage and the requirements of the society and its traditions for marriage.

As far as the religion concerns, when a man and a woman announce to the public their intention to live together permanently, then this is marriage.

People may then extend this to their own customs and traditions to appreciate and enjoy the occasion. There is nothing wrong with this as long as nothing against the religion is done in these occasions.

I can fully understand that a Christian girl may like to marry in the church. I do not see any problems with this in principle. My only suggestion is that it will be nice to conduct the ceremony in a way that both parties could relate to and appreciate. There are many things in common between a Muslim and a Christian.
