Quran 23:45 What Does Clear Authority Mean?
Question:
023.045 Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our Signs and clear authority.
Salaam bro Can you clarify what does clear authority refer to here?
Answer:
The verse is:
ثمَُّ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسىَ وَ أَخَاهُ هَارُونَ بِايَاتِنَا وَ سُلْطَانٍ مُّبِين
It has been said that the word Sultan has two meanings: 'Reasoning' and 'Authority/Dominance'
In my current understanding these meanings are closely interrelated. It is due to the clear reasoning brought to people that a person will then enjoy dominance and authority among them.
Bringing this to the context of the God and His messengers, this clear reasoning is the ability to make the truth crystal clear which then based on the Sunnah of the Almighty provides the messenger the right to dominate and have authority among those who arrogantly rejected the truth. One of the tools that contributes in providing clear reasoning is the signs that the messengers bring, which we refer to as miracles. Therefore in my understanding in the above verse Ayat (signs) and Sultan (Reasoning and Dominance) are closely related.
In the light of the above explanation, I prefer to translate and interpret the verse as follows:
"Then We sent Musa and his brother Harun, with Our Signs and (further) clear reasoning (and consequently dominance over those who were the addressees of this reasoning)." (23:45)
In dealing with both the system of Fer'un and the Bani Iasrael, as the Qur'an narrates, Musa (pbuh) was in a number of situations where the clear reasoning and the dominance that God had blessed him with was illustrated. It seems like it was due to this vivid and variety of situations in Musa's (pbuh) life that the Qur'an has referred to it seven times (4:153, 11:96, 23:45, 28:35, 40:23, 44:19, 51:38). In 14:10-15, the same is mentioned for a number of the messengers in the past. In verse 4:91 the same is mentioned for the believers and the followers of the Prophet (pbuh) at his time
