Qurbani (Animal Sacrifice)
Question:
Is Qurbani Farz or Sunna? Is it mandatory for a muslim to perform qurbani? what is the criteria to see who has to perform it? If i am the bread earner of my family and i have two daughters then do i have to do qurbani for all the family members or just myself?
jazakallah hum kher in advance.
Answer:
In principle, Qurbani (Animal Sacrifice) becomes obligatory in the following situations:
- For the one who does Tamattu' (Umrah and Hajj in one trip), here the animal sacrifice is in fact an atonement for benefiting from the allowance of doing Umrah and Hajj in one trip.
- Other acts of atonement that may become obligatory for the person for example killing a land animal while being Muhrim in Hajj.
- When one makes an intention (in other words promises God) to do so
Apart from the above it is also a great act of worship to offer animal sacrifice in other occasions. In particular it is highly recommended (but not an obligation) for a person who is not going to Hajj to do so for the 10th of Zi al-Hajjah. It is recommended based on the practice and the hadith of the prophet that in this situation the person should refrain from cutting nails and hairs from 1st of Zi al-Hajjah till when the animal is sacrificed.
The non-obligatory animal sacrifice in principle is an act that is fulfilled collectively in a household, meaning, each household will only do one animal sacrifice in Zi al-Hajjah. This is normally done or arranged by the head of the household.
So to answer your question specifically, if you are not going to Hajj then you are not obliged to do animal sacrifice. It is however highly recommended that you do so if you can afford it. You only need to do one sacrifice for your household. If you decide to do it then it is recommended that you refrain from cutting your nails and hairs before offering the sacrifice.
