Tawriyah (Appropriate Lie) by Prophet Joespeh pbuh in surah Yousef
Question:
Salaam bro
I can understand the use of "permissible Tawriyah" in specific circumstances i.e. to save ones life.orprevent a huge clamity.I could not undertsand the reasons given by scholars for the Tawriyah of Prophet Joseph, in relation to stopping the return of Benjamin his brother. The popular argument is that he wanted to protect his brother from coming to any harm from his step brothers.
Quran states that the motives to bring Benjamin with them to Egypt was that Prophet Joseph pbuh had clealry stipulated that they had to being him, it was the requirement for them to get the rations. Secondly, they pledged to their father that they will look after him. Lastly one of the brothers stayed back with him when he was found to be guilty of stealing the Royal measurement cup.
My query is that can we state after reading from the Quran that Prophet Joesph pbuh did Tawriyah to protect th elife of his brother Benjamin? If not why did he have to resort to it? was it the scheme of God and was as planned by God?
Answer:
The verse of the Qur'an (كَذَالِكَ كِدْنَا لِيُوسُف 12:76) says very clearly that this was what Yusuf learned from God, so yes, in a way you may say it was the scheme of God. The reason does not appear to be to protect Binyamin, for the same reasons that you described. It seems like Yusuf simply wanted to start the process of bringing his whole family there, starting with Binyamin, while giving his brothers some bad time in the process. He was in particular keen to keep his young brother as the start of this process who appeared to be suffering from bullying by his brothers (see 12: 69 َ فَلَا تَبْتَئسْ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُون).
