Verse 40:11: Two Death, Two lives (follow up two)
Question:
"They shall say: Our Lord! You made us subject to death twice, and gave us life twice, so we confess our faults; is there then a way to get out?" (40:11)
Further to your answer I have two further queries:
1. If we accept interpretation B as suggested by you. then what do we call what we are doing now i.e this life
2. In your interpretation of the verse above, sins committed in which life are referred to? life one, life two, death one, death two?
Answer:
For the benefit of the readers, the interpretation B of verse 40:11, that the question refers to, is as follows:
- It refers to death after this life and then the transition from Barzakh to the day of judgement which is like a second death. This means the two lives are life in Barzakh and life at the day of judgement.
My answers:
1. The verse has no intention to count the total number of deaths and lives that we are experiencing. If this was the case then based on your own understanding, that you expressed in your last follow up question, three lives should have been mentioned (life before coming to this world, in this world, and after this world). The verse simply refers to two lives and two deaths that serve as a lesson for us. As I wrote in my previous answer:
“The verse is referring to realisation of death and resurrection as another witness against the rejecters. In other words, what will shake up the rejecters is the fact that they have been resurrected twice.”
Therefore by referring to the life after death and life after resurrection for the day of judgement (that is the interpretation that I prefer) the verse does not deny the life of this world.
2. If you appreciate what I wrote above then this question will not arise.
