Is God Sadist (Follow Up: Honest Polytheism)?
Question:
i am very grateful for your so an exhaustive response to my question. Here i have another query.
it is a new dimension to me to learn that "honest believing" can also earn salvation. it can solve a lot of my queries but i need to have more evidences to adopt it.
secondly, according to Mr Ghamidi, lack of knowledge for not knowing the right path can become an excuse but there is no excuse for polytheism. polytheism is an assertion which has no knowledge, evidence. so polytheism will not be excused (even if believing in it honestly).
what do you say sir?
Answer:
As for the benefit of honest belief in something that may not be correct, the verse 5:119 that I mentioned in my original answer is enough. Other verses like 2:286 where God promises that He does not hold people responsible for something that is beyond their capability are also evidences. To expect a person to accept the truth while he in all honesty has not recognised the truth is asking him to do what is beyond his capacity.
Further, think about it in a reverse logic:
A person in all honesty believes in something that we know is wrong. He has never seen anything that convinces him that what he believes in is wrong. Saying that such person will be punished by God equals to questioning the justice of the Almighty and many verses of the Qur'an that say that no one will be wronged in the hereafter.
Also, if the above is the case, i.e. people are punishable even if they are not convinced about the truth, then what is the point of having prophets of God preaching for their nations for a long time before their nation get punished due to rejecting them? If honest belief was not important than simply hearing about the truth (without necessarily being convinced by it) would have been enough, meaning that the prophets of God only had to give the news to their people and didn't need to stay with them to convince them.
Note the emphasis of the Qur'an about 'knowingly' (not mistakenly) rejecting the truth, check out verses 2:22, 2:42, 3:71, 61:5, 2:146, 6:20.
As for the case of polytheism the principle is the same, that is, based on the Qur'an even an honest polytheist can hope for God's mercy and forgiveness. The principle of 'Salvation of Honesty' supersedes the principle of 'Not Forgiving Polytheism'. Having said that, I think pure polytheism is such a huge and obvious false belief that with a little deliberation its flaw will become obvious.
Hope this is clear.
